Caption:   The Leslie Salt Company, founded in San Mateo by C.E. Whitney, bought two small salt plants in Redwood City in 1907. By 1910, Leslie owned 2,000 acres of marshland on San Francisco Bay. Leslie expanded in 1940, adding 1,500 acres of marsh land for more salt ponds. In 1951, the company built a 460-foot loading dock and two loading towers so that two ships could be loaded simultaneously. At its height, Leslie produced 500,000 tons of bulk salt from 6,000 acres of solar evaporation ponds in San Mateo County. The salt was stock-piled prior to being shipped by boat to other Leslie plants and commercial users. The salt plant is now owned by Cargill Co., one of the world's leading producers of salt.
