Redwood City Airport buildings and field (c.1930). The airport was started in 1916 by aviator Silas Christofferson, and used as an airstrip and flight school until the mid-1930's. The inscription on the photograph reads: "The old field - Si. Christofferson Redwood City - Calif." A quotation on the back of the photograph written by aviator Will Parker reads: "The finest flying field in the world. Two miles long and a mile wide at the south end. Smooth as a floor - and blessed with the finest weather in the world. What a pitty (sic) it is not now the SF Airport instead of a replica of the Indianapolis Speedway (without the good drivers)". Redwood City Airport was located near what is now Chestnut Street, between Veterans Blvd. and Broadway. |
