Caption:   Allen Planing Mill interior (1908). Before 1870, raw lumber wa shipped to San Francisco for dressing and then shipped back to Redwood City for sale locally. With the opening of planing mills, however, costly freight charges were curtailed. The Allen Planing Mill on Main Street was owned by George Allen. Shown working the equipment in this photograph are (left to right): George Allen, Ed Allen, Dick Svihus, and Chick Beeson.
