Caption:   Allen Planing Mill exterior (1908). Before 1870, raw lumber was shipped to San Francisco for dressing and then shipped back to Redwood City for sale locally. With the opening of planing mills, however, costly freight charges were curtailed. The Allen Planing Mill on Main Street was owned by George Allen.
