Caption:   Sparky the fire dog in front of Station No. 1 (1955). When the Redwood City Volunteer Fire Department was formed in 1861, it was the first non-profit organization in San Mateo County. Ownership of the department was formally transferred to the city town trustees in 1888. Station No. 1 on Middlefield Road was completed in 1920. The building is now part of the Main Library. Shown in this photograph is Sparky, the dog who accompanied fire fighters to school visits during Fire Prevention Week in the 1950's. Sparky is sitting in the front seat of a pumper truck.
