Caption:   Workers laying sidewalks (c.1890). Shown in this photograph are several workmen laying wooden sidewalks in the area of Stambaugh Street. Sidewalks were the reason that Redwood City incorporated in 1867. Residents had become tired of walking through the mud, but only an incorporated city could contract to have wooden sidewalks installed. This photograph was taken by James Van Court.
