Industry: U.S. Steel, American Bridge Division. Enterprise Journal Newspaper: "A 51-ton transition section for the Merced Irrigation District's Exchequer Dam awaits shipment from American Bridge Division Plant, South San Francisco. More than 2,300 tons of steel were Used in manufacturing penstock tunnel liners and Spillway gates for the Merced River Project." In 1917 Western Pipe and Steel bought Schaw-Batcher Pipe Works Company. Located on Butler Road (later listed as 1050 Oyster Point Blvd., at the same location). During World War II (1940-1945), 45 ships (CIB's and C3's) were built in 48 months for the Maritime Commission. In 1948, the company became Consolidated Western Steel Co., a division of United States Steel. In 1964, became known as United States Steel, American Bridge Division. The plant was then a rolling mill. The steel was made elsewhere and reformed at this location. The plant was closed and torn down in 1983. |
