Caption:   Industry: U.S. Steel, American Bridge Division. American River Pedestrian Bridge (replica of the Golden Gate Bridge), Sacramento, date unknown. In 1917 Western Pipe and Steel bought Schaw-Batcher Pipe Works Company. Located on Butler Road (later listed as 1050 Oyster Point Blvd., at the same location). During World War II (1940-1945), 45 ships (CIB's and C3's) were built in 48 months for the Maritime Commission. In 1948, the company became Consolidated Western Steel Co., a division of United States Steel. In 1964, became known as United States Steel, American Bridge Division. The plant was then a rolling mill. The steel was made elsewhere and reformed at this location. The plant was closed and torn down in 1983.
