Caption:   The turning basin - view from the creek (1901). In 1851, a deep-water channel that ran inland to what is now downtown Redwood City was discovered off of San Francisco Bay. Named Redwood Creek, this channel was used by the lumber companies to ship wood and logs from the redwood forest in the peninsula hills to San Francisco. Soon products of all types were brought to the waterfront for export and Redwood City became famous for its workable port. A turning basin for boats and ships was located where the Creek intersected with Broadway. The rear of the Capitol Hotel is shown in the center of the photograph.
