| Caption: | San Mateo County's first courthouse (1866). Simon Mezes, the agent for the Arguello Family, donated a block of his land to San Mateo County in 1856 to be used for a courthouse building. The first building was constructed in 1858. Originally a two-story structure, the building was damaged by an earthquake in 1868 and the second story was removed on the recommendation of architect A.H. Jordan. Called "The Grist Mill Courthouse", the building was torn down in 1884, after the construction of a newer courthouse building. This is the only known photograph the first courthouse building when it was two-stories. | ||
