Caption:   Telephone switchboard operators (1920). Redwood City's first telephone exchange was established in 1892 by the Peninsula Telephone & Telegraph Company. Nine residents and businesses initially contracted for service. By the turn of the century, there were 91 telephones in use in Redwood City. The telephone exchange office was located on Middlefield Road, across from the county courthouse. Shown in this photograph are six local telephone operators.
