Railroad work crew on hand cart (c.1880). The first train came through Redwood City in 1863, when the San Francisco-San Jose Railroad Company established railroad service between San Francisco and Palo Alto. The SF-SJ Railroad was bought out by the Southern Pacific Railroad in 1868. Shown in this photograph is a work crew on a railroad hand cart stopped in front of the first passenger depot in Redwood City. It was built in 1864 and was originally located on the west side of the tracks near the corner of Brewster and Arguello Streets. In 1871, the depot building was moved to the east side of the tracks, south of Broadway, and in 1875, it was again moved to the north side of Broadway. This photograph was taken by James Van Court. |
