Caption: | San Mateo County Jail building exterior (c.1935). The San Mateo County jailhouse was located at 715 Webster Street (now Middlefield Road) in Redwood City, the county seat. Completed in 1916, the jailhouse was built for $60,000. The architect was Will Toepke of San Mateo, and the contractor was Pauly Jail Construction. The County Sheriff's Office was also located in the building. The capacity of the jail was originally for 58 people, but by the late 1940's, was housing almost twice that number. A new county jail was built in 1959. | ||
