Caption: | Statute of Civil War soldier and the G.A.R. plot in Union Cemetery (c.1950). Union Cemetery was founded in 1859 on Woodside Road in Redwood City. The local chapter of the Grand Army of the Republic bought a plot and had a statue of a Civil War soldier erected in 1889. The inscription on the monument read: "To the Memory of California's Patriotic Dead who Served during the War for the Union". The statue was destroyed by vandals in 1968, but a replica was erected by the Historic Union Cemetery Association in 1999. | ||
