Caption: | Aerial view of the Frank Tanning Company (1917). Frank's Tannery began operations on Redwood Creek in 1873. Tanneries in Redwood City were a by-product of the lumbering industry. Tanbark was stripped from trees, then dried and boiled in water, creating the tannic acid used in making leather. Frank's Tannery was located on the site of the present-day Mervyn's Plaza. The business closed in 1959 and the vacant buildings burned to the ground in a 1968 fire. This photograph was taken by pioneer aviator Victor Johnson. | ||
