Caption: | Frank Tanning Company workers with hide (1938) Frank Tanning Company workers (1885). Frank's Tannery began operations on Redwood Creek in 1873. Frank's employed many Redwood City residents throughout the years. The men in this photograph are holding an elephant hide that was being prepared for tanning. Tanneries in Redwood City were a by-product of the lumbering industry. Tanbark was stripped from trees, then dried and boiled in water, creating the tannic acid used in making leather. The business closed in 1959. | ||
