Caption: | The Faith just before launch at the Port of Redwood City (1918). Spectators gather to watch the launching of the Faith into Redwood Creek on March 14, 1918. The first concrete ocean vessel in America was built and launched at the Port of Redwood City. At the time of its completion, the 5,000-ton ship Faith was the largest concrete ship in the world. Construction of concrete ships was initiated during World War I as an alternative to using steel, which was becoming scarce. The war ended before the ship engaged in any military action. | ||
