Caption: | Launching of the Faith at the Port of Redwood City (1918). The first concrete ocean vessel in America was built at a shipyard on Redwood Creek, and launched at the Port of Redwood City on March 14, 1918. At the time of its completion, the 5,000-ton ship Faith was the largest concrete ship in the world. Construction of concrete ships was initiated during World War I as an alternative to using steel, which was becoming scarce. The war ended before the ship engaged in any military action. | ||
