Caption: | Spectators boarding the Faith (1918). Spectators took tours of the Faith, immediately after having watched its launch at the Port of Redwood City on March 14, 1918. At the time of its completion, the 5,000-ton ship Faith was the largest concrete ship in the world. Construction of concrete ships was initiated during World War I as an alternative to using steel, which was becoming scarce. The Faith was constructed at a shipyard on Redwood Creek. The war ended before the ship engaged in any military action. This photograph was taken by A.W. Buschke, who was a foreman during construction. | ||
