Caption: | Portrait of Phillip McEvoy (1892). Local resident Phillip McEvoy was elected Sheriff of San Mateo County in 1892. McEvoy's main focus during his term was promoting the building of a new jail, since the antiquated jail house located on Cassia Street was subject to many escapes. McEvoy easily won re-election in 1896. On 26 October 1897, McEvoy was shot in the arm as he was attempting to arrest Thomas Flannelly for the murder of his father. Blood poisoning set in and McEvoy died two days later. Flannelly was sentenced to San Quentin and executed in 1900. | ||
