Caption: | Redwood City's first fire engine (1937). The Redwood City Volunteer Fire Department, formed in 1861, was the first non-profit organization in San Mateo County. Soon after the completion of the town's first firehouse, in 1862, the department purchased a Cowing Co. hand pumper which was hand-drawn by the volunteers to water cisterns located at various sites throught the town. The pumper was used at Redwood City's first major fire when the American House Hotel burned in 1864. In this photograph, Fire Chief Mark Ryan (right) shows the pumper to Pacific Fire Chiefs president Sam Agnew. The pumper is now housed at Station No. 9. | ||
