Caption:   Firemen training at Station No. 1 drill tower (c.1955) When the Redwood City Volunteer Fire Department was formed in 1861, it was the first non-profit organization in San Mateo County. Ownership of the department was formally transferred to the city town trustees in 1888. Station No. 1 on Middlefield Road was completed in 1920. Shown in this photograph are fire fighters during a training session behind the station.
