Caption:   Redwood City Fire Department museum interior (1967). When the Redwood City Volunteer Fire Department was formed in 1861, it was the first non-profit organization in San Mateo County. In November of 1862, the first fire house was built at the corner of Marshall and Main Streets. The ownership of the department was formally transferred to the town trustees in 1888. As part of Redwood City's Centennial celebration in 1967, the Fire Department displayed many of the photographs and artifacts that had been collected over the years in a small museum on Broadway. Artifacts from the museum were transferred to the new main fire station when it opened in 1986, and photographs and documents were given to the History Room at the main library.
