Caption: | Fire pole cage and dormitory in Station No. 1 (1986). When the Redwood City Volunteer Fire Department was formed in 1861, it was the first non-profit organization in San Mateo County. Ownership of the department was formally transferred to the city trustees in 1888. Station No. 1 on Middlefield Road was completed in 1920. The building was used as a fire stations until 1979, and subsequently remodeled for the city's Main Library building, completed in 1988. The former dormitory is now part of the Library's program room. | ||
