Caption:   Industry: Western Pipe & Steel (ship launching 1942 or 1943.) In 1917 Western Pipe and Steel bought Schaw-Batcher Pipe Works Company. Located on Butler Road (later listed as 1050 Oyster Point Blvd., at the same location). From 1940-1945, they built 45 ships in 48 months for the Maritime Commission during World War II, including CIB's and C3's. In 1948 the company became Consolidated Western Steel Co., a division of United States Steel, and in 1964, became known as United States Steel, American Bridge Division. The plant was now a rolling mill. The steel was made elsewhere and then was sent to this location to be reformed. In 1983 the plant was closed and torn down.
